Lithuanian Officials: Poker is a Sport. How about online poker?
23.03.2010 -Post-Soviet Lithuania has been one of the fastest growing economies in Eastern Europe. With a population of 3 million people, it is among the countries with highest GDP per capita in the region.
As of this week, Lithuania has officially recognized poker as a sport, setting a benchmark among EU member states. After breaking the news the Lithuanian Department of Physical Education and Sports founded the ‘Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation’ (LSPF) as the official coordination unit.
Andrius Tapinas was appointed head of LSPF. “This is extremely important step in our work. We are receiving congratulations from many of our colleagues abroad and I know that we are breaking thick ice with our progress for similar international initiatives.” he commented the development.
Industry professionals including Lithuanian born poker pro Tony G (Antanas Guoga) applaud the regulation. The International Federation of Poker (IFP) signed up the newly formed federation in its member list.
The first LSPF poker tournament has been scheduled for 24 April in the capital Vilnius, and meanwhile an official tournament schedule is being drafted to be presented to the media.
