France Voted Online Poker Regulations
08.04.2010 -The increasing number of online poker rooms targeting European players is spurring many governments to sit down and rethink the way online gambling is organized. The French Parliament has recently passed a bill regulating poker and related online games considered gambling. With 299 voted in favor and 223 against it, the bill is scheduled to go in effect before the Soccer World Cup in South Africa in June.
According to the new regulation, online poker will be taxed at 2 per cent, while sports bets at 7.5 per cent. Apart from supporting the state budget, finance minister Fransois Baroin says that "This text will allow us to progressively dry up the black market in online gambling by creating a legal offer which obeys the rules.”
Online poker has been gaining popularity in France, as more and more French pros are taking part in championships and tournaments worldwide. Recently PokerStars even announced the launch of a live event called France Poker Series.
